Wild Camping & Back Country Adventures

Love to explore the great outdoors and get off the beaten path where there isn't a bin in sight? Us too. But we also want to leave nature exactly as we found it and that means packing out everything we took in... that includes toilet paper and wipes which campers often do not plan for.

Wild camping spots are often littered with toilet paper, wipes, and number twos that are sometimes buried but often just covered in a few twigs and toilet paper. Frankly it's disgusting and can ruin beautiful remote places.

Those who love the outdoors have a duty to protect it, and to leave it in a state which is enjoyable for those who visit after them. That means planning, and being responsible.

PupPouches can be used as an effective tool for making that happen, and offer a simple solution for packing everything out without smelling a thing.

3 steps to deal with human waste while hiking

1) Plan: What will I do and what do I need?- Will I a) pack it out? or b) bury my waste

Depending on my plan, do I need poo bags, a trowel to dig a deep enough hole, toilet roll, hand sanitizer, or a PupPouch?

2) Pack: Toilet Paper, hand sanitizer, wipes, poo bags, trowel, PupPouch.

3) Put into Action: If you've decided to pack it out, be sure to collect your waste as if picking up after your pet with a durable poo bag. Put it and any toilet paper, wipes and sanitary products in your PupPouch. You might not want to knot the bag, that way it'll be easier to empty down a toilet when you get to one later. Roll the PupPouch down to lock in the smells and pack everything out when you leave. You can put toilet paper and human waste down the toilet and wipes in the garbage.

Decided to bury your waste?

STEP ONE: Locate cat holes at least 200 feet (about 70 to 80 adult paces) from water, trails, and camp.

STEP TWO: Select an inconspicuous site where other people will be unlikely to walk or camp.

STEP THREE: Dig a hole 6-8 inches deep and 4-6 inches in diameter with a small garden trowel.

STEP FOUR: The cat hole should be covered and disguised with natural materials when finished.

Examples of cat hole sites include thick undergrowth, near downed timber, or on gentle hillsides.

If camping with a group or in the same place for more than one night, disperse the cat holes over a wide area; don’t go to the same place twice.

Try to find a site with deep organic soil. This organic matter contains organisms that will help decompose the feces. (Organic soil is usually dark and rich in color.)

If possible, locate your cat hole where it will receive maximum sunlight. The heat from the sun will aid decomposition.

Choose an elevated site where water would not usually go during runoff or rain storms. The idea here is to keep the feces out of water. Over time, the decomposing feces will percolate into the soil before reaching water sources.

Avoid areas where water visibly flows, such as sandy washes, even if they are dry at the moment.

"Proper disposal of human waste is important to avoid pollution of water sources, avoid the negative implications of someone else finding it, minimize the possibility of spreading disease and maximize the rate of decomposition". LNT

Baby Diapers & Nappies

Nature calls whenever nature calls, and that might leave you with a full diaper, wipes everywhere and nowhere to dispose of it. Not everywhere you go has a diaper genie, and we understand not feeling great about leaving a smelly diaper in a friend's bin, or in the restaurant bathroom. Trips to the park or walks in nature often don't have the option of a garbage bin which can be limiting to where we can adventure with our little ones.

PupPouches can be used for locking in the smells of used diapers and provide freedom and peace of mind wherever you go, knowing you're prepared. They're easy to rinse out after use, or simply air out if you've used a plastic bag to wrap the diaper in. Putting diapers directly into the PupPouch is a great option for environmentally conscious parents who want to reduce their single use plastics consumption.

Wondering which size you need? We recommend the PupPouch Original or PupPouch Extra, our larger options.

The Ostomy Community

Through a customer reaching out to us, we discovered that PupPouches are an effective smell proof solution for storing full ostomy bags. We were moved when we realised our product could be used to help people in a deeply meaningful way; to help them regain some normalcy and control in their day to day lives after undergoing a life changing surgery.

According to The Ostomy Canada Society approximately 1.3 million people globally are living with an ostomy such as an ileostomy, colostomy or urostomy. Over 200,000 people in the UK and 150,000 in Canada. Ostomies are lifesaving, incredible procedures, but understandably life altering.

PupPouch started with just the Mini and Original bags. I'd considered adding a larger bag with a pocket suitable for carrying a phone, but decided against it. I then got an email from a lady named Karen who was inquiring about using a PupPouch for her Colostomy bag during work hours. She was starting a new job and wanted to find a solution so she wasn't self conscious about it. She told me at her current position there was only one sanitary bin for her to dispose of her used bags. It was emptied once a week and had made her feel self conscious and bad for the cleaner who emptied it.

I sent her a PupPouch Original to test out and she loved it. She was able to store her Colostomy bag under her desk in her sealed PupPouch and couldn't smell a thing. Her messages really moved me, and it inspired me to bring the PupPouch Extra into existence. Karen had used the PupPouch Original for the used bag and a pencil case for her supplies. I wanted to provide an option where everything could be in one place, and still have the reassuring smell proof sealing.
